G.O.P. Nomination
My thoughts on the some of the Republican candidates for the 08 election.
Rudy Giuliani - Of all the front runners he would have to be my first choice. If he wins the nomination he has a good chance of winning the whole thing. The only question mark with him is: Is he conservative enough on social issues to get the "James Dobson" vote? I don't think he is.
John McCain - His campaign has been a disaster. He was running even with Giuliani but now even Romney is beating him is some polls. His biggest appeal is to the center/Moderate Democrats but with Giuliani and Obama running, his support has been disappearing
Mitt Romney - I'm surprised that he hasn't been doing better then he is. He raised the most money on the G.O.P. side and he should appeal to the social conservatives. Being a Mormon might hurt him but I think the biggest reason for his lack of support is flip-floping on various issues. As governor of Massachusetts he supported both abortion rights and universal heath care but as a candidate he has come against both of those issues.
Fred Thompson - Some of the most polls that came out have shown Thompson and Giuliani running even and Thompson hasn't even officially entered the race yet. The Republicans have been looking for the next "Reagan" ever since 1988. I think that a lot of people thought that George W. Bush might help fill the gap left by Reagan, but as we have all seen Dubya is light years away from what Ronald Reagan was. Thompson will fall short of measuring up to Reagan (who doesn't?) but he might be the best chance we have to regain some of the magic we had with Ronald Reagan.
It appears to be a two man race between Giuliani and Thompson. Only time will tell who wins the nomination but my support is firmly behind Fred Thompson.
Next Time: The Democrats
